Change is here. From Aoraki, across the high country, down the awa, across wetlands to te moana; the takiwā is changing.

As a leader in the tourism industry, Ngāi Tahu Tourism is spearheading sustainable initiatives across its diverse range of experiences, emphasising our core values of kaitiakitanga (environmental stewardship), tikanga (cultural preservation), and whanaungatanga (community engagement). While each business within the group is forging its own path, there are cohesive actions being undertaken to drive sustainability forward.

Kaitiakitanga (Environmental Excellence)

All Ngāi Tahu Tourism businesses have achieved the prestigious Qualmark Gold Standard, underscoring our commitment to environmental best practices throughout all areas.

By the end of 2024 Ngāi Tahu Tourism will have solar panels in place at half of our venues with plans for more installations in the future, reducing our reliance on non-renewable fuels and mitigating environmental impact.

Ngāi Tahu is actively engaged with Toitu, collaborating to measure greenhouse gas emissions and implement strategies for mitigation and reduction across its operations.

The group is transitioning its transport fleet towards sustainability, introducing electric and hybrid vehicles to reduce reliance on diesel. Initiatives such as fuel monitoring for on-site diesel tanks and SAFED driving courses further enhance fuel efficiency and safety.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism is committed to reducing single-use plastics in its retail operations, transitioning to reusable products and sourcing locally to minimize carbon footprint. New branded merchandise is crafted from recycled materials, aligning with the company’s ethos of conscious consumption.

With further initiatives in the pipeline, including world first innovations and commitments to regenerative farming practices, Ngāi Tahu Tourism look to remain as leaders in sustainable tourism.

Whanaungatanga (Community Engagement)

Ngāi Tahu Tourism actively engage with local communities through charitable donations, rubbish collection efforts, and tree planting initiatives, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and community support.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism’s collaboration with local partners aims to restore native environments, foster regenerative tourism and support community well-being through local planting initiatives at many of our venues, including the Ōkārito Plant Project on the West Coast.

Tikanga (Cultural Preservation)

Sharing the stories of Ngāi Tahu and mana whenua is essential to ensuring our manuhiri have a truly authentic ‘Kiwi’ experience.

Ngāi Tahu Tourism delivers cultural and educational experiences for both staff and visitors, collaborating with experts to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sustainable practices.

The responsibility of leaving our whenua (land) in better place that we’ve found it is felt deeply by our whānau and rūnanga as our landscape and its resources are the main inheritance we will leave future generations. We look forward to sharing our journey and knowledge with all choose manuhiri who choose to visit a Ngāi Tahu Tourism experience.
